UNESCO on the Year of the Periodic Table
UNESCO has declared 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table. 15O years ago, the systematic relationship between atomic mass and chemical properties of the elements was recognized.
There is a lot to report on the UNESCO Year of the Periodic Table. 2019 marks a number of anniversaries for science: 500 years ago, the universal genius Leonardo da Vinci, in the same year, the Portuguese Fernando Magellan for the first circumnavigation of the globe. Also celebrated is the 250th birthday of Alexander von Humboldt and, of course, the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. But something else is celebrating its birthday: the periodic table - its 150th birthday.
The discoverers of the periodic table
Actually, the periodic table has two fathers: the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleyev and his German colleague Julius Lothar Meyer. The two independently discovered the systematic relationship between atomic mass and chemical properties of the elements. This discovery resulted in the "Periodic Table of the Elements". Because this overview is so epoch-making, UNESCO has declared 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table.
