The Lausanne IMD Business School has the World Competitiveness Ranking 2020 published. This compares the competitiveness of 63 nations. Switzerland takes third place and thus moves up one place compared to 2019. It had already improved by one place in the previous year.

Competitiveness from a country perspective should provide a new framework for quantification. Ultimately, the IMD ranking should allow to identify the most important economic factors. "Competitiveness is both a tool and a goal of economic policy - and of prosperity," says the IMD website.

Where does Switzerland score?

Switzerland scores highly in the report, mainly thanks to its government. In the category that measures the effectiveness of governments, it achieves second place worldwide. Switzerland also shines with its infrastructure, which is rated as the third best in the world.

In the area of economic efficiency, Switzerland comes in ninth. It can also benefit from its good healthcare and education system.

The first two places this year are occupied by Singapore and Denmark. Behind Switzerland, the Netherlands and Hong Kong follow in fourth and fifth place.

The World Competitiveness Ranking has been conducted at the IMD Business School since 1989. It is currently based on 235 indicators.
