Every year, 2.3 million people lose their lives as a result of a workplace injury or illness. More than 300 million others suffer a non-fatal workplace accident. Such accidents and illnesses represent an enormous burden. ISO 45001 will enable industries and organizations of all sizes to optimize the health and safety of their workforce, reduce risks and develop better working conditions.

The origins of ISO 45001 lie in OHSAS 18001, which sets out requirements and recommendations for the implementation of a system and structure to protect the workforce (reduce risks). It is designed for effective integration into existing management systems and complements related measures.

ISO 45001 is due to be published in October 2016.
