Intelligent Energy System in the "White Paper Smart Grid, Vol. 2

Our energy system is becoming smart: The integration of new renewable energies such as wind and solar power means that our electricity grid is also facing major challenges. With the "White Paper Smart Grid, Vol. 2" of the Smart Grid Switzerland Association (VSGS), an industry-wide basic document is published.

The future electricity system will be smarter, more flexible and more reactive.

Impacts, measures and results for Switzerland's smart grid - the new "Smart Grid White Paper, Vol. 2" addresses all of this. It not only clarifies the most pressing questions for the future Swiss electricity supply, but also draws scenarios and reports on the results already achieved in the smart, electrical energy system.

The future electricity system will become smarter, more flexible and more reactive. The three main drivers for our system to change are the increasing decentralised feed-in from wind and solar power, increased energy efficiency and time-varying electricity production. Together, they generate the fourth driver, the need for information and networking.

With the increasing complexity of the energy system, an individual mix of measures is needed that takes account of the local situation. With regard to a rollout of smart meters, the minimum requirements and possible project planning are shown. Smart meters are already being used in practice today. Decentralised feed-in, temporal variability, new market players and networked value chains are changing the market environment. Nevertheless, the electricity market is based on electricity grids.

At least in critical situations, security of supply and thus the grid view must have priority. These and further considerations are summarised in five theses in the White Paper. The energy transition planned with the Federal Council's Energy Strategy 2050 will change the electricity grids, especially the distribution grids. The VSGS is addressing this development and, together with the larger Swiss electricity companies, is publishing the "Smart Grid White Paper, Vol. 2", the updated second edition.
