Half the width of a hair: Xerox nozzles for innovative 3D objects

The term of the day is "on-demand" personalization. Xerox offers an innovative solution for label-free personalization of products and packaging using tiny stainless steel nozzles in the new Xerox Direct to Object inkjet printing system for three-dimensional objects.

The nozzles in the printheads - which themselves are just the size of a deck of playing cards - print on objects the size of a bottle cap as well as those that span the circumference of a helmet. Xerox Direct to Object nozzles print on plastic, metal, ceramic and glass. This eliminates the need for additional labeling.

Xerox software ensures precise registration and industry-leading color calibration.

Xerox uses advanced image quality algorithms to control the microscopic nozzles, which are less than half the width of a hair. These nozzles apply ink to the object from a distance of about 6 millimeters. The printing system can print on both smooth and rough surfaces. Slight curvatures are just as little a problem as gradations. The resolution ranges from 300 to 1,200 dpi.

The Direct to Object inkjet printing system can produce up to 30 objects per hour and can be scaled to meet production requirements.

Packaging and production segment

Every packaging designer and supplier probably dreams of eliminating the effort and cost of labels and instead being able to easily produce personalized packaging. The new solution can even be complemented with a conveyor belt due to its flexible architecture.

As a tailor-made solution, the Xerox Direct to Object inkjet printing system is manufactured on demand. Xerox cooperates directly with customers to meet any individual configuration requirements. Pricing starts at $145,000 in the U.S., but varies depending on configuration and features.
