ETH posts record number of spin-offs

Last year, a total of 30 new companies were founded at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH). This represents a new record in spin-offs. Most of the company start-ups were in the ICT sector.

In the last ten years, a total of 242 new companies have been founded at ETH, informs the ETH in the appropriate Communication. Last year, the number of spin-offs reached a new annual high with a total of 30. A year earlier, the number of spin-offs had been 27.

As in 2018, most spin-offs in 2019 are active in the field of information and communication technology (ICT). Compared to the previous year, the number of spin-offs in the field of new materials has increased significantly in 2019. According to ETH, the focus on sustainable and ecological materials shows that the climate year has also been reflected in the university's spin-offs. In the statement, ETH elaborates on the three spin-offs FenXNeustark and Dimpora on. FenX and Neustark are working on sustainable building materials. Dimpora has developed an environmentally friendly membrane for outdoor clothing.

The volume of investment in ETH spin-offs has also developed positively, the university adds in its statement. At 630 million francs, more funds than ever before were invested in ETH spin-offs in 2019. The ETH spin-off GetYourGuide the fresh capital brought in a market value of over CHF 1 billion even before the IPO.
