OST: Merger of three universities of applied sciences
On 1 September 2020, the tried and tested universities of applied sciences FHS St.Gallen, HSR Rapperswil and NTB Buchs will merge to form a single university of applied sciences in Eastern Switzerland, the OST.
The OST is the university of applied sciences for the six cantons of Eastern Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. With around 3,800 students in six departments, 1,500 professionals continuing their education and over 1,000 current research projects, we are the educational hub of the region. The OST combines over 170 years of educational and research tradition.
On September 1, not only the three universities of applied sciences will merge. At the same time, another change will take place that will also directly affect the two institutes MNT and PWO. These will then merge to form the new Institute for Microtechnology and Photonics IMP.
Institute for Microtechnology and Photonics IMP
This is intended to achieve the following goals:
- Bundling of the competences photonics, microtechnology, materials and production metrology in one institute to make synergies in competence development and cooperation even easier.
- Focus of the two cross-cutting themes of photonics and microtechnology, both in teaching and research, to the innovative areas that will continue to be of great importance for Switzerland and for the region and its economy in the future.
- Further development of the successful Competence Center Production Metrology at the Institute in the direction of ultra-high precision metrology, in order to open up the measurement accuracies required in high-precision manufacturing, e.g. in the field of photonics and microtechnology.
- Integration of the materials competences in the institute as a basis for the development of microtechnical and photonic systems.
- Extension of our clean room operation to enable the production of samples and small batches for or by external companies and partners.
In this way, we provide even better support for the economy.
The new institute will be headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Ettemeyer. Prof. Dr. Carsten Ziolek will assume overall responsibility for research and teaching in the field of systems engineering as head of the Systems Engineering Department at OST.
