The vote on the first draft (DIS) of ISO 45001 "Occupational health and safety management systems" in May 2016 did not achieve the required approval of over 75 percent. The draft was then fundamentally revised on the basis of the more than 3000 comments received and is now available for voting as a second draft.

The draft standard is divided into two parts. While the main part specifies the requirements, Annex A provides guidance on the use of the document. One of the objectives in developing the standard is to achieve alignment with ISO 14001 "Environmental management systems - Requirements with guidance for use" in order to facilitate the simultaneous application of the two standards by organizations.

Key points of the revision were:

  • The scope of application was aligned with the scope of ISO 14001 and supplemented by a reference to compliance with legal requirements.
  • Some of the sub-clauses in sections 8 and A.8 have been renumbered to align with the numbering in ISO 14001.
  • The addition of a new clause 10.1 and associated section in Annex A.10.1 to align the standard with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 "Quality management systems - Requirements".
  • Further informative text relating to contractors has been included in section 8.1.6.
  • An additional note has been added to the definition of "outsource" and the text in section A 8.1.4 on "outsourcing" has been revised.

The next meeting of the responsible international project committee ISO/PC 283 "Occupational health and safety management systems" is planned for September 2017. If the second draft is approved in the current vote, the final draft (FDIS) can be expected in autumn 2017 at the earliest and publication in March 2018.

On the German side, the work is being carried out by NA 175-00-02 AA "Occupational health and safety management systems" in the DIN Standards Committee on Organizational Processes (NAOrg) intensively accompanied. It is intended to publish it as a national standard (DIN ISO). (Source: DIN)
