Better integration of industrial design into the product creation process
The aim of the new VDI/VDID 2424 is the optimum integration of industrial design into the product development process. The guideline deals with the necessary steps to be taken in the field of industrial design and specifies the interfaces to product creation.
Industrial design is an important part of the product development process: design and engineering are ideally closely interlinked and lead to mutual optimisation, as the VDI, Association of German Engineers, writes. A successful industrial design improves the product, the usability and the positive effect on the user group.
With its new directive VDI/VDID 2424 the VDI wants to contribute to a structuring of the processes and to a professionalization and better integration of industrial design. It introduces the methods and tools used in industrial design and assigns them to the phases in the design management process.
The guideline was developed jointly by the VDI and the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID) and is addressed to all persons involved in the product development process, especially engineers, industrial designers and product managers.
Directive also contains example
The contents of the VDI/VDID 2424 and the process of the integrated industrial design are oriented towards the VDI 2221 Sheet 1which maps the systematic product development process, according to a further statement. It accompanies the process in all phases, from the idea through planning and conception to concrete implementation and monitoring. The guideline also contains an application example, which clearly illustrates the development phases in connection with the product development phases according to VDI 2221 Sheet 2 sets.
Publisher of the Guideline VDI/VDID 2424 "Industrial design - user-centered design in the product development process" is the VDI Society for Product and Process Design (GPP). The guideline was published as a draft in July 2021 (order via Beuth Publishing House+49 30 2601-2260, or online at www.vdi.de/2424 or www.beuth.de).
According to the VDI, it is possible to help shape the guideline by submitting comments using the electronic appeals portal or by written notification to the issuing company (gpp@vdi.de). The objection period ends on 31.10.2021.
VDI guidelines can be used in many public display free of charge.
