Privacy boxes for more privacy and security
Data leaks, phishing emails, computer viruses - as quickly as the dangers on the Internet increase, so do the methods of protecting oneself against them. Normal Internet and smartphone users in particular are finding it increasingly difficult to adequately protect their devices, and thus themselves, against malware and data theft.
More and more channels are eavesdropping on the privacy of a modern user. We leave data not only on computers, but also on devices like iPhones. So-called privacy boxes such as the RelaxBox from the Berlin startup RelaxInternet can provide a remedy. Such a box is simply connected to the WLAN router. This way, even non-techies can quickly and easily protect their laptop, tablet or mobile phone in the entire network without having to complete an IT training course beforehand.
Protection via the router
"Many Internet users surf the net every day with more than just one device," says Maximilian Pohl, Managing Director of RelaxInternet and WLAN expert. "Almost all of them protect their PC with at least one anti-virus program, but the mobile devices are usually left out. Privacy boxes are a quicker and less complicated solution than equipping each device individually with the corresponding additional software. They are simply connected to the router and thus secure the entire network," explains the Relaxbox co-founder.
Privacy boxes combine protection against malware with anonymization methods such as a VPN tunnel, which allows users to disguise their location and thus surf the net undetected. "In a few years, privacy boxes will be as commonplace as an antivirus program," Pohl says. "Above all, they can make everyday life easier for non-techies. They can move more safely and freely on the net because, for example, they can also gain access to otherwise blocked pages."
Caution when surfing
In addition to securing the home network, however, the expert still recommends that users surf attentively and handle their data responsibly: "A box like Relaxbox is a good and simple way to secure one's devices at home, especially for anyone who is not an IT expert. However, they are certainly no substitute for attentive and cautious use of the net, which offers many possibilities but also harbours just as many dangers," says Pohl.
The box is intended to make the Internet safer and freer for ordinary consumers - by automatically and effortlessly encrypting data, intercepting malware and disguising the origin of the surfer.
