Swiss recycling PET receives environmental certificate

For the first time, Swiss Climate and PET Recycling Switzerland are issuing environmental certificates for bottles made from Swiss PET. This allows beverage producers to prove how much CO2 emissions, petroleum and energy they save.

Switzerland is one of the first countries in the world to receive an environmental certificate on Swiss PET beverage bottles. Compared to other beverage packaging, PET bottles have a particularly good environmental balance. For the year 2019, the consulting firm specializing in CO2 Swiss Climate and the association PET Recycling Switzerland now issued environmental certificates for the individual bottlers for the first time.

"With this certificate, beverage producers can prove for the first time how many CO2 emissions, how much petroleum and how much energy they save thanks to the use of Swiss recycled PET," the managing director of PET Recycling Switzerland, Jean-Claude Würmli, is quoted as saying in a joint media release from the two organisations. "The external audit by Swiss Climate guarantees that the environmental certificate also delivers what it promises."

Thanks to high-quality Swiss R-PET, virgin material can be replaced and resource consumption reduced, confirms Tobias Jung, Senior Consultant at Swiss Climate. In addition to the environmental benefits, the certificate also proves that the R-PET used is a purely Swiss product.

Switzerland was one of the first countries in the world to close the PET cycle. PET bottles are not only collected and disposed of, but also recycled. There are over 50,000 collection points throughout the country.
